During the 57th expedition outside the walls, he was ordered by Erwin to prepare explosives for the capture operation of the "Female Titan." During the operation to capture the Female Titan in the Stohess District, he was reprimanded by Hange for repeatedly stabbing the crystal-encased Annie with a broken sword in a fit of rage.

He fought against the Titans that infiltrated Wall Rose and at the ruins of Utgard Castle, scolding Eren for recklessly joining the battle. Later, he engaged in combat with the Colossal Titan and Armored Titan after they revealed their true identities but was defeated and severely injured.

After the operation to reclaim Eren, he returned with Hange and Moblit, and was on a mission to tail the First Interior Squad of the Military Police who were escorting Eren and Historia. However, he was ambushed and shot dead by Traute. In the anime version, he was acting as the coachman of the carriage transporting Eren and Historia, who had been rescued from the Reeves Company, but was shot dead by a female member of the First Interior Squad who attacked.
