Character Setting

Edit

Hyogoro, also known as "Hyogoro of the Flowers," is a legendary yakuza boss from Wano Country in the world of ONE PIECE. Now 70 years old, he once ruled the underworld with both respect and strength, admired as a true leader. After refusing the rule of Orochi Kurozumi, he lost everything and was thrown into the Udon prison, where he spent 20 years enduring harsh labor. Though weakened by age and hunger, Hyogoro regains his spirit after meeting Luffy D. Monkey and becomes a key figure who helps rally the samurai for the great battle on Onigashima. Famous for his "Ryuo" (special Armament Haki), his unique sword style, and his unbreakable will, Hyogoro stands as a symbol of loyalty and bravery.

Hyogoro has water-blue, flame-like hair and a slim, elderly frame. In his younger days, he was stocky and muscular, like a strong guardian statue. He has a cherry blossom tattoo on his upper body. Now, due to age and malnutrition, he is much smaller—even shorter than Luffy D. Monkey. Despite his tiny size, he still has enough strength to wield a sword.

  • Height: 100 cm
  • Age: 70 years old
  • Blood Type: S
  • Birthday: February 14
  • Zodiac Sign: Aquarius

Hyogoro is calm and humble on the surface but fiercely loyal and brave. He is gentle and kind to the weak, always standing up against injustice and unfair power. Even when threatened with death, he never surrenders his beliefs. The prisoners at Udon call him "Grandpa Hyo" with affection, showing how much people trust and respect him.

He often calls himself "temae" or "ore," and he refers to Luffy D. Monkey as "Straw Hat man."

Hyogoro was once the most powerful yakuza boss in Wano, running the underworld in the Flower Capital. He was deeply respected not just by other yakuza bosses, but also by samurai like Oden Kouzuki. Orochi Kurozumi became shogun and demanded Hyogoro serve him. When Hyogoro refused, his wife and followers were killed, and he was imprisoned in Udon. Everyone thought he was dead.

Even while imprisoned, he kept his sense of honor and courage, though he was close to losing his will after 20 harsh years.

Hyogoro is famous for his excellent sword skill and use of "Ryuo," a strong form of Armament Haki from Wano. He can cover his sword with Haki, sending out energy that blasts opponents away without even touching them.

  • Sword Style: Flower One-Sword Style ("Hana no Ittōryū")
  • Main attack: "Fury Hair Radiance" (Angry Hair Shine), using fiery Haki to cut through many enemies.
  • Ryuo (Advanced Armament Haki): Allows him to hit and even destroy opponents without direct contact.

Even when weakened, Hyogoro can defeat tough enemies with one attack. When he briefly regained his old strength on Onigashima, he took down many elite fighters alone, amazing everyone.

Hyogoro also became Luffy D. Monkey's Haki teacher, helping him learn advanced techniques.

Hyogoro was close friends with Oden Kouzuki, who admired him. He was widely respected by the other five yakuza bosses of Wano. Even Gol D. Roger, brought by Oden, met Hyogoro. Many prisoners and citizens look up to him and trust him.

He looks up to Luffy D. Monkey as someone worthy of the old samurai spirit and feels inspired to fight again after meeting him.

"Hold true to justice, help the weak, never bow to evil power!"

"I have to show true chivalry in return for his chivalry!"

"Hyogoro of the Flowers, after so long... my belly and heart are finally full!"

"This is the land of the samurai! Once, many men like that lived here! You killed them all!"

"The fire of rebellion... still hasn't gone out...!"

Past

Twenty years ago, Hyogoro was the main yakuza boss in Wano and kept peace in the Flower Capital’s underworld. When Orochi Kurozumi became shogun, Hyogoro refused to obey the Kurozumi Clan. In revenge, his wife and subordinates were killed and he was sent to the Udon prison mine. The world believed he had died.

Prison Life

For over 20 years, Hyogoro suffered in Udon’s prison mine, forced to do hard labor. His spirit was almost broken, and his health got very weak. He struggled just to earn enough food to survive each day.

When Vice Warden Dobon stomped on him, Luffy D. Monkey saved him. Feeling grateful, Hyogoro started to respect Luffy D. Monkey. He later shared food with Luffy D. Monkey, which broke prison rules and led to cruel punishment by guards Babanuki and Daifugo. However, he chose not to bow to violence, inspired by Luffy D. Monkey’s kindness.

The Sumo Inferno and Learning Ryuo

Hyogoro and Luffy D. Monkey were forced into “Sumo Inferno Death Match.” Although Hyogoro worried about being a burden, together they kept winning. During this time, Hyogoro taught Luffy D. Monkey the advanced “Ryuo” Haki technique.

That night, Hyogoro met Raizou, who told him that Momonosuke Kouzuki was still alive. This news restored Hyogoro's will to fight against Orochi Kurozumi and Kaido.

Udon Takeover

The next day, as the guards tried to start the execution again, Big Mom (Charlotte Linlin) attacked the prison. In the chaos, Hyogoro was almost killed by a “slave collar,” but Luffy D. Monkey saved him. When Queen left with Big Mom, Hyogoro, Luffy D. Monkey, and allies seized control of Udon.

Afterward, Hyogoro helped Luffy D. Monkey train in Haki for the big battle. He also led the prisoners and yakuza in preparation for the final fight.

Onigashima Raid

During the raid on Onigashima, Queen spread the “Ice Oni” virus. Hyogoro was infected, and his body returned to its strong, muscular peak as the virus pushed him to his limits. He teamed up with Drake, slashing through powerful foes to protect Chopper Tony Tony.

When he was about to lose control and harm his friends, Hyogoro asked Yatappe to put him down before he turned fully into an “Ice Oni.” At the last moment, Chopper Tony Tony cured him, letting him rejoin the battle, although his body returned to its smaller, weak state.

  • Hyogoro may be based on the real-life yakuza chieftain Chogoro Yamamoto (Shimizu Jirocho).
  • Author Eiichiro Oda is a big fan of the movie series "Jirocho Sanmon-gishi," which stars Yamamoto, and even drew illustrations for the DVD release.
  • Hyogoro once had the early nickname "Demon of the North," ruling over another region named Ringo.

  • Group: Boss of the Hyogoro Family
  • First Appearance: Volume 92, Chapter 926 ("Prisoner Mine")
  • WT100 Poll: Ranked 216th
  • Favorite Food: Super premium sake

Hyogoro is remembered as a true hero of Wano, a leader who helped the people even in his darkest days.
